Walk into any specialty coffee shop and you’ll see both single origin coffees and blends on the menu. They look similar in the bag, but they represent very different philosophies about what coffee should taste like — and how it should be made.
Here’s what sets them apart, and why we chose to build Deep Space Coffee exclusively around single origin.
What Is Single Origin Coffee?
Single origin coffee comes from one specific place — a single farm, cooperative, region, or country. Every bean in the bag shares the same terroir, the same variety (or set of local varieties), and the same processing method.
The result is a coffee that expresses a distinct sense of place. When you taste notes of yuzu and mandarin in our Kercha Haruse from Ethiopia, or chocolate and dried fruit in our Cafe Kreyol from Bolivia, those flavors are direct expressions of where and how those beans were grown. Nothing is added, blended out, or averaged away.
What Is a Blend?
A blend combines beans from two or more origins, roasted separately or together, to create a specific flavor profile. Blending is a craft — a skilled roaster can use it to achieve consistency, balance, and complexity that no single origin might provide on its own.
Blends are especially common for espresso, where a Brazilian base might add body and crema, while an Ethiopian component adds brightness and fruit. The goal is a predictable, reproducible cup that hits the same notes batch after batch.

Is One Better Than the Other?
Not at all — they serve different purposes. A great blend is a masterpiece of balance. A great single origin is a window into a specific place and moment in time.
We focus on single origin at Deep Space Coffee because we believe the most interesting thing about coffee is its origin story. The altitude, the variety, the processing method, the farmer’s choices — all of it ends up in the cup. We want you to taste that.
Why Single Origin Varies Season to Season
One thing to know about single origin: it changes. A coffee from Kercha, Ethiopia this harvest may taste slightly different from the same region next year. Rainfall, temperature, harvest timing — all of it influences the final cup. Some coffee drinkers find this frustrating. We find it fascinating. It’s the same reason wine enthusiasts talk about vintages.
The Takeaway
If you want consistency and approachability, a well-crafted blend is a great choice. If you want to explore the full complexity of what coffee can be — to taste the difference between Ethiopia and Bolivia, between natural process and washed — single origin is where that journey starts.
